People disagree about whether the piano is a percussion or a string instrument. You play these instruments by pushing its 88 keys with your fingers. The keys lift hammers inside the piano that strike strings which produce its distinctive sound. The piano has the largest range of notes of any instrument in an orchestra.
The piano/keyboard supports the harmony in the orchestra, but it is equally as good as a solo instrument.
